Y’all, it’s been a WEEK.

When it rains, it pours, right? Thankfully a lot of the things that have made my head spin this week have been good things… like a meeting with super cool people about doing some freelance food writing, running into an old high school friend and meeting her littles at the park, getting tons of totally gorgeous wild mushrooms and other wild edibles to play with in the kitchen, making spur of the moment house building decisions, Dubs deciding that he’s a big boy and wants to go to be later but ALSO wants to crawl in bed with mama around 5:30 am every morning, learning that I’ve moved into the Demo stage of the EatWith host process, feeling crazy frustrated but also really heartened by a couple of conversations about privilege and race with people in my circle. You know, the usual.

Anyway, the week has been wild for me, but I want to know about you! What things have you been cooking? Who’ve you been visiting with? What did you read or watch that made you think, “hmmmmm…”

Here is a brief list of the things on my mind…about the south, food, community, and then just cool things in general.

THIS COOKBOOK Comes out in 2 WEEKS. HOW can I STAND IT? But seriously, John Currence’s Big Bad breakfast in Oxford, MS is one of my very very favorite brunch spots. Let’s all preorder it right now because the peppery cathead biscuits and home cured bacon and homemade jam are just really things we want to recreate in our own kitchens.
This isn’t new, but I DIED reading about what millennials like and don’t like to eat. I’m on the very cusp of being a millennial, so I don’t feel bad about giggling (hard) and what Bon Appetite had to say.
SO MUCH FOMO about missing BevCon in Charleston last week. Y’all. The learning. The networking. The Drinking. It looked so fabulous. Next year?
Also, re: BevCon.. Cathead vodka posted this amazing combo to their Instagram and I can’t wait to host a brunch so I can do it myself. Genius.
In honor that the National Park service turned 100 this week, here are some good reads about upping your camping-cooking game. I liked this one, and this one, and let’s be honest, this one is kinda silly and for VERY serious foodie people who probably are more glamping than camping, but still.
I have recently gone chanterelle crazy… apparently Ikea did, too.
I love the Bitter Southerner. This week they shared a great essay about a little girl, her daddy, and a coal miner’s lunch pail. Check it out.

Have you ever been totally befuddled by the coffee aisle? I needed some good coffee to celebrate Cafe Au Lait day this week, and got stuck. My honey will tell you that I’m the SLOWEST decision-maker on the planet (I prefer “deliberate”) so even my grovery store runs take longer than they should. The coffee aisle is the worst…. too many choices! My little dude, Dubs, took advantage of my distraction to open nearly all of the squeeze pouches in the buggy. *sigh*

Well, there’s a storm a-brewin’ in the southern food writing world, it seems. Bitter Southerner published an article about the takeover of southern food writing by men (calling them “the new carpetbaggers”) and Southern Foodways Alliance took issue with it. Read both perspectives and tell me what you think.

I laughed SO hard: Is this a super southern crime or THE MOST southern crime? (hint: it involves alligators and fast food drive-thrus.)

How badly do I wish I’d been the person doing this interview? Allegedly he came to Jones County for research for the Free State of Jones movie. Think he’ll come back for the premiere?

They announced the James Beard award nominees this week.. everyone on my feeds seem to be twitterpated about it all. Which nominee are YOU most excited about?

Oh y’all… I want to be these two super cool gals‘ pal, badly. Their instagram feed tells me that they spend their days around and about Charleston, SC, wearing super chic outfits and taste-testing cocktails. Um, dream job. On top of that, their blog has great cocktail recipes and more!
This recipe showed up in my bloglovin feed awhile ago and I’m DYING to try it. Pinch of Yum’s Creamy Sweet Potato Thai Curry… they had me at sweet potato and then they said Thai Churry. What???

I’m heading out in a few minutes for my first SFA Food & Media Symposium. Birmingham, Alabama, here I COME! I’ve been having nightmares about spilling my cocktail on John T. or slipping and falling and letting everyone see my underpants, so wish me luck and grace this weekend.
