Dining Out Delta: Rhoda’s Hot Tamales

September 25, 2012 by biz.w.harris@gmail.com 1 Comment

we had the most fun delta adventure last saturday when my folks came for a visit (went to Rhoda’s in Lake Village, antiquing, old building exploring, and river gazing) and it ended the way of all great Delta adventures…with a tetanus shot in the ER.
but before all of that, we had lunch at rhoda’s famous hot tamales... delicious burgers, HOMEMADE hot tamales, and FRESH fried peach and apple pies. AMAZING. there’s a reason why every single tamale trail guidebook or Arkansas tourist or adventure magazines and websites mentions a stop by rhoda’s as a must.

hot tamales are a delta delicacy, and you can get a dozen or half dozen in nearly every town, which is why the southern foodways alliance mapped out the very best spots in the delta to have your craving for this spicy dish satisfied AND why greenville is hosting the Delta Hot Tamale Festival in October with tons of restaurants AND individuals lining up to compete for the title of BEST Tamale!(i can’t wait!!)

i’ve had hot tamale’s at doe’s, at the alluvian, from stands along the highway, i’ve bought them frozen from little old ladies at church farmer’s markers, i’ve even tried to make tamales myself ( and it’s not as easy as it looks). the thing is,  rhoda’s are near the top of the list because they’ve got a little extra spice and just enough juice. If you order two or three dozen (like my friends who were going out on Lake chicot in their boat on Saturday) then you get them in a nifty coffee can. (so awesome.)

sure, the food was good, but the best part of our trip came when we got an actual visit with the famous rhoda.she brought out a huge plate of just-been-fried fried apple and peach pies and told us about her family and about all the visitors from all over the state and country who come to get a taste of her food.

it was a magical day with my folks. and then a few hours later, i stepped on a rusty nail. 😉
